The CO2 removal section in our Ammonia plant operates under technology licensed from Gimmarco Vetrocoke, Italy consisting of Absorber which is is having three bed and two Strippers operating under dual pressure of two beds each
It is planned to reduce the Energy consumed in the Ammonia Plant in regulation with the Government norms.
Hence one of the modification is to combine two beds in the bottom of the Absorber thereby reducing the flow of Absorbing solution into the absorber and reducing the steam consumption by the Pump at the consequence of increasing pressure drop across the absrober
We have to assess the selection of Packings which are to be proposed by the Vendor such as IMTP40, Pall Rings etc., Based on my knowledge the choice of packing is a balance between surface area for mass transfer and dP which determines approach to flooding as well as approach to the lower loading limit. Flooding concern is obvious while lower loading limit is a decline in performance due to the liquid just "falling" through the column with reduced mass transfer efficiency.
BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW OF ANY METHODS AVAILABLE FOR THE SELECTION OF PACKINGS
