Hi folks,

 

We are planning to install a de-acidification and de-colorization bed in our MS storage vessel for our pilot plant study. We have a 25in (dia) x 75 (in) height MS storage vessel. We intend to make a de-acidification bed in a HDPE oil drum (200 lit) (23.5 dia ) and put it inside the storage vessel (kind of an cartridge arrangement). There will be holes at the bottom to allow the percolation of deacidified oil. Please refer to the attached diagram.

 

Since, HDPE is a non conductor, the charge developed due to rubbing of incoming oil with the HDPE drum walls won''t be dissipated. Although the  atmosphere is inert but while taking sample or draining the treated oi, the air will enter into the vessel.

Also since the oil is entering at a temperature of 70-80 deg.C, there will be some vapors present at the top of the storage vessel.

 

My concerns are as follows:

 

1. Can static charge develop due to the potential difference between the oil and the metal vessel?

2. My understanding is that the oil and pipe or outer storage vessel will be at the same ground potential. But for a brief moment the oil might develop some potential by virtue of its contact with HDPE drum. Can difference in static charge generate spark at this point?

3. While leaving the HDPE drum, the oil again comes in contact with the MS storage vessel. Can difference in static charge generate spark at this point?

 

Is it a safe operation.

Your guidance and advice in this regard will be deeply cherished.
