3-phase Separator Sizing

Why are you interested? If you explain your need or application, perhaps we can lend you a hand and give you a lot of help and leads that could save you a lot of time and future uncertainties. Requesting information from an engineering Forum just because you’re interested or have a hobby of chasing interesting items is another thing. We’re on this Forum to help other engineers. It helps us help you if you carefully state your need and application in detail. Otherwise, we all spend needless hours battering subjects and items that make no sense whatsoever. Help yourself by help us with ALL the detailed Basic Data. When you request a design, please tell us if you mean a process design or a mechanical design. Be specific about which one you mean.
For example, if this an “Oil Patch” application? I designed 3 such 3-phase separators six month ago for a tank battery and several gas/condensate wells in West Texas. I’ve done more in the past. I’ve also responded to several similar requests on this Forum in the past. If you use our search engine, you may find those responses.
Basically, 3-phase separators – as applied in the crude oil/natural gas production industry – are a misnomer. There are actually 2 basic phases involved. One is the gas, or vapor, phase and the other is the liquid phase. In the event the liquid separated is composed of two immiscible liquids, then these are separated by applying decantation principles within the basic separator. The products are 1 gas phase fluid and 2 liquid fluids. Is this what you mean?

Thanks a lot for your post.In fact,i introduced with you and your proffession @ www.eng-tips.com and i am so so happy that see u here,too.
I am interested because i am a recently graduated chemical engineer and as you know i should spend lots of time in terms of equipment sizing.I have information about Vapor-Liquid and Liquid-Liquid Separators sizing and for the next step i decide to learn about 3-Phase Separators.But I did not find enough references for it except Gas Conditioning book.I need a reference that learn me step by step sizing of this equipment.
I prefer to learn both process and mechanical design but at the moment only process design aspects.
My Application is in MEG Recovery and TEG Dehydration Units but as u mentioned Oil is another application.

1. "Design Two-Phase Separators Within the Right Limits", W.Y. Svrcek, W.D. Monnery, CEP, October 1993. This article was followed with a letters to the editor and a correction in one of the equations but I don't have the date for that.
2. The companion aritcle on Three-Phase Separators is, "Successfully Specify Three-Phase Separators", Same authors, CEP, September 1994
3. "Design of Liquid-Liquid Gravity Separators", J. Bocangel, Chemical Engineering Magazine, February 1986
4. "How to Design Settling Drums", B. Sigales, Chemical Engineering Magazine, June 1975\
This should get you started.
