Hello everyone,

I am looking for articles with feedback/return-on-experience regarding relief valves interlocking:

- focusing on interlocks with key versus 3way valves, example here attached;

- advantages and inconveniences;

- reliability matters ;

- cost.

What readings would you recommend to me, please?

Thank you

Much depends upon the jurisdiction that regulates such things.

Hi,

In the link attached you will find references to read : http://orangetech.co..._Protection.pdf

At the end it should be a decision from the owner and the management team . Cost should not be the issue .

My view

Thank you for your replies.

Yes, I do know and use Standards such as API, ASME, and ISO.

I was aiming to collect a return of experience that would help to prove one option versus the other.

I have always used designs with interlocks on staggered relief valves, without any special operational issues. But when using 3-way valves, I already had one of these mechanically blocked, and therefore, impossible to make the relief valve change over, without shutting down the entire refinery steam main header.

Please provide a brief description for: "Interlock on staggered PSVs" you have already used...

About the mechanically blockage of 3-way valve, have you periodically inspect it for ease and smooth operation?

Thank you for your message Fallah,

This is the "piping arrangement" I am referring to, as an example:

Unfortunately, I am afraid that no one is taking care of "smoothing" instruments.

Thank you Breizh,

sure it is, but with stubborn people, we often need a few more arguments.

I am going trough a few references on instrument reliability, I will let you know if something comes up.

Regards,

I don't understand what issues you are trying to address. An explanation will be of great help. You might also tell us your facility location.

Bobby hello,

thank you for your message.

I am searching for references about instruments reliability, more precisely, about isolation valves used on relief valve change over.

The plant is in Europe, if it helps.

Before you go too far, you should determine what the relevant codes require. Do you have a preference that is hard to sell to your management? Or boss?

Interlock is applied on Duty/Spare PSVs not on the Staggered PSVs in which following to relief load increment they will be opened one by one till all opened at maximum relief load...

Hi ,

Consider this reference where the author addresses  the use of a 3 way valve  (chapter 6)

The safety relief valve handbook  by Marc HELLEMANS

Hope this is going to help you
