Hi,

I would need support to design a quench drum (vessel is presented in API521, but no clear design procedure).

A stream of vapors of methanol outlet of rupture disk (or MeOH and water vapors) enters this quench drum which is fed with cooling water at the top part of the vessel.

I need to design this vessel and ensure that all vapors are condensate (ideal case), or that 50-90% of the vapor stream is condensed, therefore flowrate at vessel outlet is significantly reduced.

Any suggestion is very appreciated.

Thank you!

Florentina

You could ask a packing vendor to design the column. Here is one vendor's offer to design from your data:

[note Bobby's correction below -- packing not allowed in this service.]

Since this is on the discharge of a pressure overprotection device one cannot use conventional packing. Usually an open spray chamber is used for such.
