Hi,

 

I am reviewing the vendor proposal for a non-metallic chemical storage tank for storing diluted KOH. The vendor has provided only 200 mm top freeboard above the working liquid level. It seems low to me. The tank has nitrogen blanketing to prevent any oxygen/CO2 ingress. Is there a minimum head space requirement for proper N2 padding?

 

The slosh wave height due to seismic factors is not significant. So that's not a factor in determining the freeboard height.

As far as I know, nitrogen blanketing requires only a vapor space. Pressure changes would be more rapid with a small vapor volume. Overfill would be my concern also since there is not much allowance for level measurement inaccuracies. Sizing liquid storage to allow 10% vapor volume would be my first inclination to have a reasonable design margin.
