Q1.Coming to side strippers for Crude distillation side cuts, how do we finalize whether the side stripper column needs only Direct steam provision or only external reboiling or both Direct steam and External reboiling provision?

I have observed in some side strippers of CDU columns.

Both Direct steam and reboiler is given for Swing Naphtha/ Light kerosene/Heavy Kerosene side cuts strippers and only direct steam provision for Light Gas Oil and Heavy Gas Oil side strippers.

Q2. What will be the issue if only reboiler provision is given for Light kerosene side stripper without direct steam provision? Or only direct Steam provision instead of reboiler?

Kindly guide.

Q1: Optimum rate of return by calculating cost of products and capex&opex of CDU. Note that some operators even use for stripping hydrogen instead of steam. All depends on money and availability of sources. For cases such complexity Aspen1 has dedicated utilities providing a prompt prediction of opex&capex of a process unit.

Q2:

Reboiling only - overduty of kero trim cooler

Stripping only - kero contamination by water

Advise - check temperatures in a side stripper and a relevant section of a fractionator - maybe temperature is not high enough to guarantee water condensation does not occur. Depends on local water partial pressure. Free water is allowed only in condenser stage.
