Silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4, aka tetrachlorosilane) reacts with magnesium metal (Mg) to make pure solid silicon and magnesium chloride (MgCl2). A researcher runs a continuous flow reactor that is fed a mixture containing 84.2 wt-% SiCl4 and 15.8 wt-% Mg at a rate of 303 g/h. The reactor exit stream contains only Si, MgCl2, and SiCl4. Solve for all variables in this system.

SiCl4 + 2Mg ------> Si(s) + 2MgCl2

1.What is the flow rate (g/hr) of magnesium chloride in the outlet stream?

2.What is the weight percent of magnesium chloride in the outlet stream?

Hi,

We don't do homework, but we are happy to help. Show us your work and tell us your difficulties.

Hope you understand.

Mass in=Mass Out,

Mass balance on species to be performed,

Molecular weight of each species to be calculated,

etc.

To ease the calculation, I get use to work on 100 g basis,

Create an excel sheet to perform your calculation and communicate with us.

note: Check the given data versus the chemical reaction, you may have a deficit of reactants.!

answer 1   187.5388 g/h MgCl2           answer 2   61.89401 % MgCl2

Good luck

Breizh
