Dears,

I'm writing to inquire about the popular installation of 100% capacity spare PSV. Is this an international code/standard requirement (e.g. ASME, API, ISO)?

In the project we are in, the client representative said he is willing to shutdown the whole plant if one PSV on one pressure vessel needs to be taken out to maintenance and no need for spare PSVs unless there is a code/standard requirement because the plant is a stand alone one and not in connection to any other plant.

Your feedback and usual support is highly appreciated...

If there is no block valve below the PSV, there is no mandate.

Agree, no mandate.  This is usually a company standard practice.

Is the process batch or continuous.  This practice is not usually done for reliefs on batch processes, which start-up/shutdown every X hours or days anyway.

Hi,

Agree with comments above.

The only thing I'm aware of is that the company must have a maintenance plan in place for regular calibration of the safety equipment, with the risk to lose the operating license in case of non-compliance.

For continuous process it's generally done during shut down or turn around. For batch process it could be any time.

The plant representative should investigate about lead time for safety equipment, he /she should have in stock parts available.

My view,

Breizh

Hi,

There is no especial requirement in codes and standards such as API and ASME to show sparing is mandatory for a PSV. Normally, plant owner might made decision to consider PSV spare in order to provide higher reliability and would implement this requirement in relevant design specifications to be followed by engineering contractor.

Thank you all for the replies.

The process is continuous and its fluids are relatively clean and fouling
