For this type of reaction (second order reaction in a constant pressure-variable volume batch reactor)

 

A+B -->C

 

at T=23°C, we have k= 0.1615 L /mol*min  and CA0=CB0= 0.016 mol/L

 

Calculate the half-time of the reaction (t1/2) and the rate of conversion of reactant, A (XA) after 100 minutes.

 

 

 

What is the equation for half-time of the reaction (t1/2)

The half-life of a reaction is the time required for the reactant concentration to decrease to one-half its initial value.

hi breizh,

 

based on the data from the Book of GAVHANE, I have reached this point (see the attachment). But now I don't know how to calculate the half life of the reaction and the rate of conversion of reactant A, after 100 minutes.

hi, come on!
-ra=k CA^2=-dCA/dt
perform the integration between the limits, t & to=0 with the respective concentration CA and CA0.

can this equation be applied to the case when reaction is second order in a constant pressure-variable volume batch reactor. 

 

 

t1/2=(1/k)*[(1/CA)-(1/CA0)]

 

what is value of Cand how to find XA

Hi,

You seem not having a proper method to solve problems.

You should assess first the data available, secondly establish the general equation and finally apply it to particular cases (questions 1 and 2). 

Get the general equation: t = function (Ca, Cao, k) and then play around for your particular cases. 

1) t1/2 should be 387 '

2) XA=0.205
