I have a question regarding tube rupture scenarios for S&T heat exchangers. Typically we see the tube side MAWP being higher than the shell side, however the evaporator in question is designed as follows:
Shell side MAWP: 300 psig, low bp liquid evaporated. Protected by PSV set at 300 psig likely for a blocked outlet scenario.
Tube side MAWP: 150 psig, steam service
Per the typical 2/3rds or 10/13ths standard, a tube rupture scenario would be considered. As mentioned, typically it is the shell side that is being protected if a higher pressure tube ruptures.
Is it realistic to consider a tube rupture resulting in process fluid flowing from the higher pressure shell side into the lower pressure tube?
