Hello everyone,


I want to study the sloshing dynamics of LNG in a 20 L tank. After the controlled experimentation, I want to remove/evaporate the LNG from the experimental tank. I was wondering what are the safe options to dispose off spent LNG from such an experimental facility? Is it safe to vent it out directly into the atmosphere OR should I burn it in a flare unit? Which will be the safest and economical method for the disposal of LNG? 

Also, how can I detect the leak, if there is any?


I would appreciate if you can share any kind of schematic for such an experimental facility. I am designing this set-up for a lab-scale experiment.

The LNG without odorant added may not be easily detected by nose if leaking or released. I suggest the LNG tank experiment be performed outdoors if possible. Consider applying specially made leak detector fluids such as Snoop or perhaps a soapy water solution to connections to find leaks. It is considered more friendly to the environment to burn the natural gas, but it can be vented to a safe location if regulations allow.

Since I am interested in learning the sloshing dynamics of LNG, thus to avoid heat inleak and to maintain the liquid state of LNG, performing experiments in the outdoor may not be efficient. Is there any other safe way to discharge/getting rid of LNG after the experiments?

In process industry methan is normally vented to atmosphere and disperced. Note that LNG vapors are havier than air and are prone to flow downward and coollect and form invisible clouds.


Small does not mean safe and one's self-confidence is deadly. Industry fluids handling should be designed by a qualified person because of "why and how" are not obvious. Engineering by a person/entity having a proper and extensive background is recommended.
