Hi everyone,

We are working on a project that includes 4 jacketed valves (steam heated) with 4 steam entrance each. Also there are jacketed drain valves using same steam supply and condensate lines. There are one steam trap for 2 jacketed valve and drain valves. We concern that might lead a problem due to steam lock and group trapping. In our research, we found out that group trapping is not ideal for such cases due to condensation load differences. We think a steam trap for each valve could be used for healthy operation, separated from jacketed drain valves. I would be highly appreciated if you guys share your opinions about the subject.

Hi,

You are right, my experience with steam jacketed valves and steam tracing on Diphenol plant where the freezing point is at minimum 170 C.

Separate the network as much as you can, easier to troubleshoot later.

Edit: Google or other search engines should help you,

Key words steam traps and condensate recovery

Good luck

Breizh

The original reason for group trapping was that there used to be only one kind of steam trap. It was the forerunner of the present day bucket trap, and was very large and expensive. Steam traps today are considerably smaller and cost effective, allowing individual heat exchangers to be properly drained. It is always better for steam using equipment to be trapped on an individual basis rather than on a group basis.
