Hello,

 

I am asked to perform a FEA for a fiberglass reinforced pressure vessel but I am not sure which ASME code to use. Can ASME VIII division 2, last edition., part 5 wor for it or does it work only for steel pressure vessels? The pressure vessel will be constructed using ASME RTP-1-2021. I dont know if that helps

For Fiberglass Tank and Vessel, my company uses Process Industry Practices (PIP) standard VESFG001, titled "Selection, Design, and Fabrication Specification ASME RTP-1 and Section X".  This standard refers to "ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section X" and/or "ASME/ANSI RTP-1".

 

Your company/client should know which standards they want to use.  Ask them, starting with your pressure vessel designers/engineers, which standard they use for FRP pressure vessels.

 

From my experience and recollection, ASME Section VIII is strictly metallic materials, but I have never searched through Section VIII to verify this.

I thought as much section VIII will be for metallic materials. The client doesnt give so much information and takes long to reply. I will try to call the design engineer to confirm the code. Thank you
