I've come across a new issue I would like to get some input on. We have a PSV that was tested by our safety valve certifier that had a backpressure test performed at the calculated built up backpressure of the valve. Usually we provide a testing datasheet that is via a specific system that lists test requirements and other important and identifying information on the valve. For this instance as it was a new project PSV, the full datasheet was provided to the tester which included both the superimposed (0.02barg - flare header) and calculated built up backpressure (16barg). The PSV set pressure is 352barg. Usually backpressure tests are listed on the test certs at 1barg which I believe is just to check for simple leaks.

My concern is that applying a backpressure without a balancing pressure and force on the inlet side of the valve could damage internal components if the PSV is not designed to handle this.

We also have never provided calculated backpressures when we submit documentation to go with the PSV for testing.

I can't find specific requirements in standards that talk about this. Would appreciate some helpful comments.

Cheers
