Vacuum pumps are most effective when they pull a vapor stream. Typically they are placed after liquid is separated. Often a condenser is used upstream of the vacuum device to remove additional mass as condensed liquid in order to reduce the load on the vacuum pump.

General question will lead to a general response:

You are reducing the pressure of the separator itself; hence the vacuum pump should be installed on the separator (neither before nor after) but such that leading to minimum interfering with separation and not to draw the separated products (mostly vapor) as much as possible...

My experience with vacuum pumps, they hate liquid, in particular dry vacuum pump type !

You should install it on gas stream after condenser.
