Shunmu:

The minimum temperature of the utility fluid you can select for better condensation of acetone from a Nitrogen stream is the freezing temperature of acetone.

However, I don't think you've worded (or written) what you really mean to find out. I believe you mean to state that you want to recover acetone from a Nitrogen stream by condensing it and you want to maximize the acetone recovery and, hence, would like to know how cold you can make the cooling fluid.

If that is what you mean to state, then I believe it all depends on what you have available as incentives to recover the acetone and the available cooling fluids you have. If I have an ammonia refrigeration system available, then I would use ammonia refrigerant at -10 oC in order to condense the acetone at 0 oC. This corresponds to an acetone vapor pressure of 70 mmHg and should be as practical as you can hope to be in minimizing the amount of acetone remaining in the vapor phase as it is vented out with the Nitrogen. I would also employ a recovery pre-cooler exchanger with the condenser in order to not waste the cold nitrogen before I vent it out to atmosphere. I would use the cold nitrogen vent to pre-chill the incoming acetone-rich stream prior to condensation. That way, I would vent out warmer Nitrogen and use the cold content in a useful manner to reduce the refrigeration effect. I would also look at recovering some of the cold in the acetone liquid product as well.

I hope this addresses your question.
