Can anyone suggest guidelines for selecting Dispersed phase & continous phase in liquid-Liquid extraction column?

As much as I know, the solute which you want to recover is already present in one liquid. Whether that particular solvent becomes the dispersed or continuous phase depends on the temperature of the operation and the surface tension of both solvents.
