Hello members,

Has anyone got experience on simulating the ethylene process (ethane feed) using HYSYS or Aspen? I would appreciate a sample file in either simulator. I am particularly interested in the steam cracker and the process reactions therein. Realiastically how many reactions in the complex scheme can be added and make the simulation reasonable? What are typical cracking furnace exit compositions?

Modeling complex chemical reactions in HYSYS or AspenPlus with high level of accuracy, required for industrial plants, has never been considered as practical and/or feasible. And, in my opinion, it is definitely something no one of us wants to play with. Highly specialized industrial software has to be used instead, with built-in moduls of different reactors and with a possibility to calibrate your system based on actual plant performance.

I'd suggest you to look for KBC's product: Petro-SIM, which offers built-in moduls of various refinery and petrochemical reaction systems: CCR, FCC, HDS, Alkylation, Coker, Visbreaker, Steam Reformer etc. These models can be calibrated in extremely detailed way using Excel-based (VB) environment. Flowsheeter in Petro-SIM is actually HYSYS, with addition that - apart from standard unit operations - there are models (incorporated) of several industrial plants. I had an opportunity to use it, and I remember it was an excellent tool.

For Ethyle plant simulation Technip has developed a sotware "SPYRO". It is a ready made software for cracking furnaces.
