Hi all,

please, can any assist me with information and design detail for a liquid-liquid separator or a liquid settler.

i would appreciate the design information.

Thanks

Liquid-liquid separator design has its theoretical basis in Stoke's Law. Essentially, droplets of the light phase must rise by buoyant forces upwards and out of the heavy phase. Droplets of the heavy phase must drop by gravity settling out of the light phase. One of the phases is the continuous phase and it is this phase for which the calculations must be done. Specific "boundaries" where the equations may/'may not be applied, as well as droplet sizes to use for design are normally proprietary to individual companies. But this stuff is not high-tech. Find some good general purpose practical publications and you should be able to quickly find recommendations for design values.

as DJack mentioned, Stokes law is applied for sizing settler dimesnions, however for high concentration of droplets (volume fraction) there is a retardation effect in settling velocity which is accounted for by multiplying Stokes' velocity by (1-x_vol)^4.5

I attach also ACS manual for L/L coalescer (e.g. settler with coalescing internal upstream the settling section).

Hope this helps
