Dear All,

According to API-686, The pump suction line shall have a straight line (5D) between the suction flange and first elbow, tee, valve, reducer, strainer,... .Also in Pump handbook this is 8D~10D.

I have two questions:
1- Is this value for straight line is mandatory for all types of pumps?
2- If there is not enough space to consider this straight value, what should we do?

Regards,
Mehdi

Everything is mandatory if you are referring to a code and should comply it. Otherwise, not necessary if you can ensure that there is no cavitation. Alternately, you can go for straightening vanes (aka flow straighteners)
