Hi all,

I work for a company that manufactures equipment for process industry. We got an inquiery, where the customer would like to have a heat exchanger to cool synthesis gas with fresh air (which would be heated). Both the air and syngas are at a very low pressure (around 1 to 1,4 bar absolute). The Syngas is at 900 degrees Celsius and is corrosive. I have a safety concern: if due to an internal leak, could both gases mix inside the heat exchanger and possibly caught fire - or even explode?

Is my concern justified? What kind of design should I employ in this case? Are there any similar heat exchangers found in industry?

I would be very grateful for any information .

Best regards,

Majster

Dear Majster,

I have worked in methanol plant handling syn gas. Can you please be more specific and tell us from where this syn gas is coming ( I guess from a steam reformer) and where the air is going? What are the components in syn gas that make it corrosive at 900 OC?

If you provide this data we can start some fruitful discussion.

Regards,
