A full method for calculating the streams for a single stage or two-stage desalting operation is given in 'Oilfiled Processing Volume two: Crude Oil', Manning&Thompson, chapter 'Desalting of Crude'. Example calcs are included here also.

1. Nelson (Petroleum refinery engineering, McGrawHill, 1958) reports and explains desalting of crude oil many times in his book; however detailed sizing calculation has not been found.
2. Goggling "crude oil desalter" will give a lot of general information.
3. Following may be useful: http://www.eptq.com/...86-aea88c3fef26, http://www.cheresour...esalter-vessel/, http://217.174.18.60...pr/e-pr-700.pdf, http://www.eng-tips....=186274&page=14,http://www.jmcs.org....N1/E-Fetter.pdf.
4. Having involved in water exchanger design around desalter, I have formed the impression that desalter is often a black box (at least here) given to the specialized vendor.
