Hello,

I am filling out a heat exchanger spec. It asks for information about lifting and grounding lugs. But I have no idea what they used for. For my learning value, could anyone please explain to me what they are used for?

Many thanks,

okki:

Depending on the physical size and ultimate weight of your heat exchanger, you may need Lifting Lugs. I always allow for grounding lugs. Now, lets define what we are discussing:

Lifting Lugs = mechanical devices built in or welded to the equipment for the sole purpose of mechanically lifting the equipment (usually with cables and a crane) for installation or removal purposes. Depending on the type and size of equipment, there may be 2 or more lugs required for safe lifting.

Grounding Lugs = a positively-joined device to a major piece of equipment for the purpose of allowing the equipment to be positively electrically grounded through use of a copper cable to a stable and suited grounding device. This allows the equipment to be grounded and transfers any stray or generated electrical current within the equipment to a safe and convenient ground.

I hope these definitions suffice for your understanding.
