A saturated liquid feed that is 40 mol% acetone and 60 mole% ethanol( acetone is more volatile) is being processed in a stripping column. Feed flow rate is 10 k moles/hr. Operation is at 1 atm pressure. The system has a partial boiler. We desire a bottoms product that is 5.0 mol% acetone. Equilibrium data are
X 0.1 .15 .2 .25 .3 .35 .4 .5 .6 .7 .8 .9
Y .262 .348 .417 .478 .524 .566 .605 .674 .739 .802 .865 .929
a) If the boil up ratio is 3.0, find the value of distillate mole fraction yd, and the no. of eqiilibrium stages needed for the separation.
B) what is the minimum boilup ratio (Vbar/B)min

HI Manukamal ,
What is the question ? Do you want us to do your homework ?

*Start with a mass balance : F=D+W and F *xf =D*xd +W*xW , you should get your answer with xf = 0.4 ;xd =0.05 ; xw =? ; F= 10 Kmol/h

*Draw y versus x ,
you know that the feed is saturated then you can determine the slope of the operating line ( vertical) .
draw all the operating lines and you can determine the number of stages.

Hope it helps you , remember we are here to do your homework.

It is not my homewrok....
Thank you for ur response, but it says it is being processed in the stripping column
what does that mean???????
Are we using the total balance or juss the stripping column balance????

does saturated liquid mean saturated and is ur B = L
so that we can use V/B = V/L ???

I know How to find the no. of equilibrium stages, but I am facing problem in starting this problem like how to get the equation of operating lines????
