Dear all,

Does anyone know the formula to use to calculate the volume of an instrument air receiver. It is meant to relief control valves,shutdown valves and blowdown valves using a compressor.

I have the following information:

PSLL: 4.5barg
Actuator failure: 3.0barg
Minimum system capacity = 40Nm3/hr

Dear Friend,

Instrument air receiver capacity is based on the total requirement of all connected loads, considering all instruments operate at simultaneously.
To find out this you should know the Instrument air consumption per instrument
If you know the number of pneumatic operated instruments with their consumption, just by simple multiplication and considering some margin, you will get the required volume of receiver.

Hi,

The instrument air receiver volume considering a surge requirement time period is calculated as follows:

V= t*(qout - qin)*Pa/P1-P2

where
V = volume of the receiver, ft3
t = time for the receiver to charge or discharge, min
qout = air flow out of the receiver (surge flow to consumer), cfm
qin = air flow into the receiver from compressor (compressor duty), cfm
Pa = atmospheric pressure (14.7 psia)
P1 = Upper or maximum operating pressure, psia or psig
P2 = Lower or minimum operating pressure, psia or psig
Note: P1 and P2 should both be either in absolute or gage units
As a general guideline a surge time period of 5 minutes is commonly used for air receiver calculations.

An industry thumb rule when surge requirements are not known, is to have a 1 gallon air receiver capacity for every ACFM compressor flow.
