Hi All,
I am currently on summer placement and I was given an engineering project to attempt. It involves looking at the pipes and valves on the boiler meagre drainage system and checking they are the right size. I have a set of P&ID diagrams with the current sizes of the valves/pipes on it. My first though was to use the dopt equation from Coulsons and Richardsons Vol 6 to check the pipe diameters, the equation is:
Dopt = 293 x G^0.53 x p^-0.37
Where G is mass flow rate and p is density.

293 is the coefficient of the piping material (carbon steel) using a mean value of 0.8 for viscosity

But I have a few problems with this. There is no direct measure of steam flow during the boiler start up when these pipes/valves are used for drainage purposes (to heat the boiler up in stages)

Is there a way to determine the steam flow around the boiler during a start up? What sort of data do I need to do this?

I have attached an excel file with data and an example of the P&ID diagram to look at.
