Dear Fellow Engineer,

We have a Shell and Tube cooler working with following condition:

Pressure ~ 260 barg

Process gas inlet temperature = 165degC

Process gas outlet temperaure = 50degC.

Contamination 50 ppmv H2S

Cooling medium on the shell side of this cooler is seawater with the inlet and outlet temperature is 30 and 50degC respectively. The intake caisson depth is around -15m water depth. The platform is in shallow water and tropical region.

At the intake of seawater, we will inject hypochlorite to reduce the marine growth however people is still concerned on the fouling issue even we ensure that the skin temperature on the seawater side  is below 60degC (calculated by HTRI) in accordance with Norsok P-100 version 2010).

Frankly I am not very experienced with the Shell and Tube cooler working with direct seawater at high temperature and therefore seek your kind advise on following questions:

.

1. Whether the skin temperature on cold side at 60 degC is sufficient? is there any other constraint to keep this cooler working without fouling issue? Is dissolved oxygen in seawater is another factor to consider?

2. As tube will expose to both seawater and process gas which contains H2S, so the tube material should be very special, can Alloy 625 is OK at such process condition?

Thank you for your time.

Regards

Cuchuoi

I don't think I would rely on advice from this forum to resolve your issues. If you don't have in-house experience, you should seek the services of a qualified consultant(s).

How do you protect your shell side from tube rapture case with so big pressure differential between shell and tube?
