We have purchased a machine in which supplier has given required flow rate (160m3/hr) of cooling water for its operation. Cooling Tower is about 200m away from the usage point, now we have to select circulation pump and pipe line size. Please guide me how to proceed for this problem.

Regards,

If your company purchased equipment without knowing how it would be supplied with required utilities, it has larger problems than line sizing. If the cooling tower system already exists, it should be evaluated as a system. Any new load you add to a cooling water system will affect all the equipment of the system to some extent.

If you are the company owner, I suggest you need a competent person to manage the project. You will also need engineering expertise for the mechanical, electrical, civil, and process engineering aspects. For a small company, it may make sense to hire an outside engineering firm to supply these services.

Hi ,

To illustrate what Pilesar explained in his reply , let you consider the excel sheet attached , developed by one our member Stephen Hall  (author of Rules of thumb for chemical engineers).

note : You need to get support from an engineering company or contractor familiar with this type of project

Good luck

Hi
I am not an expert in line sizing but I have learnt it just few days before with the guidance of my pump vendor. It is based on velocity that you want to provide at discharge piping but it may change based on your further line size so consider maximum 2.5 m/s velocity at discharge side and go with the formula Q=A*V I hope you will get something required for your doubt. Thank you.
