Dear All,

We have taken up an important project of upgrading the Gas Distribution Infrastructure Protection Systems. This project is to install or modify the existing isolation valves to Automatic Shutdown Valves (SDV) or Remote Operated Valves (ROV). Thus, the goal of modifying the existing valves to SDV/ROV or installing new isolation devices is to quickly minimize the effect of any accidental gas release in the event of a pipeline rupture on high pressure gas distribution pipelines.

We are currently engaged in reviewing the industry literature on the topics of Automated Shutdown Valves (SDV) and Remote Operated Valves (ROV). The technologies and strategies employed for line break detection and mitigation vary throughout the natural gas pipeline industry. Some of the industry literature agrees that Gas Distribution Companies should develop their own criteria for the installation of automated valves based on factors such as blow down time, safety considerations, population density, infrastructure constraints and operating constraints.

In an effort to gauge the current industry perspective on the use of automated line isolation valves that responds to the line breaks, I would like to know from you guys about the use of the SDV/ROVs or equivalent technology for your Gas Distribution Networks (High Pressure:  >900psig)

Could you share with us the technical details of the isolation philosophy of your gas distribution network such as:

  1. What kind of valves are employed for meeting similar objective?
  2. Are SDV, ROV, any other equivalent technology or Manual Sectional Valves used  and state the reasons for using the same (i.e. prons and cons of choosing the specific type of valve).
  3. If SDV/ROV are used, then on which parameter (i.e. Pressure/Flow or both), the valves are set to operate in order to isolate the ruptured section in the unfortunate event of full bore pipeline rupture so as to mitigate the effects? Also, what is the basis for choosing the trip set point?

Your co-operation and knowledge sharing in this regard is highly appreciated.
