| Question: | What is the Claus Process? |
| Keywords: | claus,process |
| Answer: | Oil refineries produce a by-product fuel gas stream which usually contains considerable amounts of gaseous hydrogen sulfide ... which produces sulfur dioxide when burned. Environmental regulations in many countries require that the hydrogen sulfide be removed from the by-product fuel gas (to quite a low level) before it is burned. Similarly, raw natural gas very often contains significant amounts of hydrogen sulfide which must be removed before the natural gas is distributed for sale as a fuel. Although there are many processes available for converting hydrogen sulfide into marketable elemental sulfur, the Claus process is probably the most commonly used choice in oil refineries and natural gas processing plants. |
