Answer: European Vinyls Group uses a proprietary catalyst that allow the conversion of ethane directly to VCM (vinyl chloride monomer). Previous attempts were unsuccessful because reaction temperatures above 500 0C were necessary for a profitable reaction. These reaction temperatures resulted in the HCl corrosion of much of the equipment.
