Question: Are there any biologically based methods of removing sulfur from gasoline or diesel streams?
Keywords: biological,removal,sulfur,petroleum,products,gasolin,diesel,desulfurization,remove,removing
Answer: Energy BioSystems Corporation licensed a biocatalytic desulfurization process to a Petro Star Inc. refinery in 1998. The process was/is used to remove sulfur from a 5,000 barrel-per-day unit in Valdez, Alaska. The process uses genetically engineered bacteria to convert sulfur to sulfates which can then be removed from the streams in a separation process. The developers estimate that the capital cost is about half that of a traditional hydrodesulfurization unit and the operating cost are estimated to be 10-25% less.
