Question: What equipment or bottlenecks need to be examined if we wish to operate our refinery above its design capacity?
Keywords: operating,above,design,capacity,debottlenecking,bottlenecks
Answer: Any increase in throughput over design should be subject to a Management Of Change Review, and the subject is perhaps best handled by a full blown HAZOP (or similar methodology). Issues to be looked at (this is not an exhaustive list): Relief device capacity (including flare headers and flare stack) Alarm pointsChanges in corrosion patterns (ie moving the point of condensating in the crude overhead line)Corrosive carry over (ie from the desalter or the sour water stripper)Effect of increased velocities on corrosion (ie in hydrotreaters) and erosion (ie in FCCU's)Overfiring of furnaces and boilersInadequate cooling capacity (especially rundown to storage tanks)Equipment design pressuresInadequate effluent treatment facilities
