Question: What is the purpose of baffles in the bottom of a distillation column?
Keywords: baffles,column,distillation,bottoms,purpose,kettle,type,reboiler,thermosiphon
Answer: One common reason for baffles in a column bottoms is to provide a constant head for thermosiphon reboilers. the constant liquid head allows more consistent heat input into the tower, while the other side of the tower bottoms provides a level controlled resevoir for for the bottoms product. Outlet liquid is in equilibrium with outlet vapor. In a such arrangement reboiler represents a eqilibrium stage. Outlet reboiler liquid is not in contact with liquid stream falling from the lowest tray. This liquid stream, from other part of bottom sump, fed the reboiler. It is, normally, at lower temperature than reboiler exit liquid.
