Question: Can PVC (polyvinyl chloride) be recycled or reused in any way?
Keywords: pvc,polyvinyl,chloride,recycle,recyling,reuse,ironmaking,iron,manufacture
Answer: NKK Corporation in Japan found an interesting use for waste PVC (polyvinyl chloride). They use it as a reducing agent in ironmaking. In 1998, they processed about 30,000 metric tons of PVC and used it in their process. This displaced about 2% of the coke they used in their 3 million metric ton per year blast furnace.PVC is fed to a rotary kiln so that HCl can be removed by thermal decomposition. Reaction conditions are about 300 0C and atmospheric pressure. The PVC can then be fed to the furnace while the HCl is dissolved in water and used to wash the steel products.
