Dears,

My client is going to have a C3-Splitter tower in its project to separate a mixture of propane and propylene. the tower configuration is such that an exchanger plays the role of condenser and reboiler simultaneously and at the top of the tower a heat pump is used (vapor recompression distillation) . Due to a height limitation in site area, the client has to split this 120m tower into two sections. Has anybody ever come up with this kind of distillation tower subjected to splitting? I would be very glad to hear your commments on similar project and get to know your feedbacks on this issue. I have attached the PFD of this tower for better understanding.

Warm wishes for all

Yes, the split-tower scheme is quite common in these applications. I have an excellent article on the subject and I will gladly post it here, as soon as I find it.

Polypropylene plants have a C3 splitter or splitters to produce a polymer grade propylene. The newer plants have one column. I have worked on a large single tower installation in Texas. see attachments for help and refferences.
