A plug flow tubular reactor has same velocity over one whole section. Velocities are generally different over two different sections, but are same over all points of any one section.
Hence there is no radial or axial dispersion and residence time is same for all entering mass, i.e. there is no residence time distribution.
Of course it represents an ideal situation not often met in practice, but it simplifies rate calculations. You can have a first view of results assuming plug flow, then see if further calculations are worth while.

An additional reference is "Chemical Reactor Theory" by K. G. Denbigh, Cambridge University Press, 1965 or 1984,(bookfinder prices from $ 16 incl postage)."The plug flow assumption" is a separate part in the section of Tubular Reactors.
