Hi All,
Is it possible to have a precise measurement of air cooler outlet temperature. I'm trying to calculate the performance of air cooler.

Prav:

What do you mean by "precise"? What level of accuracy do you want?

Do you want to MEASURE the temperature (with an instrument)?
Or do you want to CALCULATE the outlet temperature?

I want to measure the temperature.... but the measurement should be reliable and continuous... I was told that generally it's not possible to have temperature indication at the outlet of air cooler... i was wondering if its true !!!!

Thanks

Praveen

Prav:

Please be SPECIFIC. As you should know, there are TWO outlets on any air-cooled heat exchanger:

  • an outlet temperature of the process fluid inside the tubes; and,
  • an outlet temperature of the air exiting the cooler.

Now, since we can't read your mind, please tell us which one you mean.

Mr Prav,

It helps to describe the scene a bit more. If you want to evaluate the performace of the air cooler ambient temperaure will play an important role besides a 'precise' temperature as you put it. if you get some reading of temperature downstream on the fluid side via a temperature element that should be sufficient. You terms 'precise' confuses as Mr Art already put it.

Praveen,

My opinion.......

Certainly you mean outlet temperature of the air exiting the air cooler.

As far as you would measure inlet/outlet temperature of the process fluid inside the tubes bundle and also the ambient temperature is specified, why do you need to measure outlet air temperature?

And yes, because of the flowing air is not enclosed (let say in a pipe/duct......and no possibility for instrument installation) and also very high cross section of air flowing area, its temperature indication (at least in precise value) isn't possible. Thus, the calculated value for outlet air temperature would be average/estimated value and doesn't indicate the precise one.
