SS,

A sand separator is nothing but a soild-liquid hydrocyclone where the sand is removed with some quantity of the liquid from the bottom of the cyclone and the sand-free liquid is removed from the top. There have been several topics related to hydrocylones on the forum. Just use the search feature of the forum by typing in the keyword as "Hydrocyclone". You will get many posts on the subject.

Regards,
Ankur.

Of course, if you want to grade the sand, the settling tank has a water flow rising through the tank and overflowing a wier.
The sand particles will tend to sink at different rates according to their size.
By adjusting the flow rate you can control the size of particle carried over the wier.
Traditionally a bubble gauge would be used to sense the slurry quality in the "teeter" zone. You can use a tuning fork density meter for the same control function.
