Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could advise.

I have designed a vertical thermosyphon reboiler and am currently calculating the shell thickness and additional lengths for nozzles etc.
I have chosen a AEL TEMA design.

I am wondering what are typical lengths for the A and L head types?

(from my understanding the exchanger part, which i have designed as shell and tube, is contained in the "E" section and the process inlets and outlets are contained in the A and L sections - is this correct??? I have obtained my tube lengths, hence my E length but am confused as what to do about lengths for A and L)

Also, slight stab in the dark here, my final reboiler design is rather long. Could anyone advise, how I would design two vertical thermosyphons in parallel?

Any input would be much appriciated! Thankyou!

Quantum,

Welcome to ChE forums. To answer your questions and to provide some additional information:

1. There are no "typical" lengths of the channel head and the rear head of an exchanger. The size depends on tube-side flowrate and pressure (thus defining the nozzle size), tube layout, and type of the head. Probably some other factors are involved, from Mechanical point of view.

2. Parallel reboilers are designed with symmetrical inlet and outlet piping, and with identical exchangers. Also, depending on how they are fed from the column, the feed arrangement has to be symmetrical as well. Before going for parallel reboiler arrangement, be sure that you really need 2 reboilers instead of 1.

More information about Shell&Tube heat exchanger is available in "Process Heat Transfer" classic book, written by D.Q.Kern.
