Hello All,

I have an interesting challenge that I have not yet come across in my many years in the industry.

I am asked to replace a 40kbpd crude oil separator with two 25kbpd crude oil separators working in parallel because those are the vessels available. I am convinced this will work as long as there is proper pressure equalization between the two working vessels. However, I need a second opinion perhaps there might be something I have overlooked, please get back to me as soon as yesterday. Thanks, I appreciate your quick response.

Hi ,
Let you try to get a copy of : gas -liquid and liquid-liquid separators by Maurice stewart and Ken arnold . Gulf equipment guides.

Hope this helps

Hi Koffi
I would be wary of making a decision based on throughput alone. If the orginal 40k separator works well, then it would be worthwhile comparing some other aspects of the new separators to the existing one. There are a number of parameters and designs that could be assessed. Text books may be useful, as suggested by Breizh earlier.

Worst case is that the old separators are of a different design (shape, orientation, internals, nozzles locations and sizes) and geometry (dimensions and relative dimensions or ratios) and could have been designed for a different inlet fluid mix. This could lead to a different separation performance. Worst case is that the 2 smaller separators were designed for another inlet fluid mix and although you could throw a total of 50k at them, they may perform poorly with regard to separation. I'm writing generally, as I do not know your application well.

Good luck.

Thank you Breizh,

Your reference is much appreciated, from where do I source this material please?

Dazzler,

Thanks for your insight, the performance and design data shows the new vessles will do a good separation job so quality of separation is not an issue.

I just needed to be sure the arrangement is feasible because the gas and liquid streams from the two vessels will be tied into a single gas and liquid line respectively to proceed to the next separation stage. I just want to be sure it won't be an operational nightmare in anyway.

More insights will be highly appreciated. Thanks all
