There are mechanical and process criteria to estimate the nozzle size, mechanical is reliability which allows higher momentum (RhoV2) however the process criteria is different which often takes into account the impact on expected separation e.g. feed nozzle size depend on what other internals are inside the vessel e.g. type of feed device, de-entrainment device etc.

Refer catalogues on vendor websites (Koch Glitsch or Sulzer) for criteria of nozzle momentum as a function of feed device type.
