What is the difference between a filter and a strainer?

What is an edge filter?

Strainer is one of the piping components to be attached for the removal of coarse(not fine) solid matters such as debris, grits, etc. to protect pumps, control valves, or others on the downstream of it. The media of the screens are usually made of metal sieve with porous back-up-holder. Cone-type temporary strainers are often used for initial commissioning of plants. The smallest particle size removable by the strainers would be around 200 microns.

Filters are general terms for separating dust or solid particles (smaller than those removable by strainers) from the gaseous or liquid fluids. The media are made of fabrics, felts, paper, ceramics, sintered metals, polymeric membranes, etc. A good variety of media types are avilable in the market.

<Edge filter> is not referred to a particular type of filter. Instead, it means a filter which can get solid particles that fall in a specific range of particle sizes by removing both larger and smaller partiles (i.e. cut off edges of larger- and smaller-size ends) using filters.
