I am working to handle the HCL fumes from the Storage and Dosing tanks as per attached scheme. Concentration of acid is 32%. and location of all the tanks are inside building. I am not able to use traditional packed bed scrubber because of some local regulation in Russian federation. I need suggestion regarding :
  • Whether I can use simple water seal pot (Diax Height - 500x500), dip the vapor line 80 mm below the water surface. How much will it help in asorption of HCL vapors ?
  • In place of water as described in S.No. 1 can I use 10-18% Caustic solution. Will it make absorption of HCL more than that of water ?
  • What factor will determine use of water or caustic as scrubbing media?
  • Can I use wet venturi scrubber for this purpose ?

Santosh

Hi

You can "dip", but I doubt that will be enough
since HCl is very much water soluble, unless you end up with too high a concentration caustic is not a good option.
The factor that will make you decide is the mass balance around your scrubber. Compare the effective bleed (or fresh water make-up) to the amont of HCl you want to block
Venturi scrubber is a good option. Make sure that the liquid that turns around in the venturi loop is diluted enough.
