Hey Guys
Just having a problem with a project that I am currently working on and it relates to calculating the heat loss and final temperature of 50% Caustic Soda Solution inside a stainless steel tank with an agitator after a certain period of time.
Caustic Soda Pearls are added to water to produce 50% Caustic Soda Solution. From my data, it shows the final temperature of the mixture to be 117 degrees celsius in 27 degrees celsius water. The tanks dimensions are 3m in height and 1.6m in diameter (6 m3) and only 3000L is made a time inside the vessel. It is a closed vessel
The average ambient temperature on a hot day is 32 degrees and on a cold day is 18 degrees. I am not using a heat exchanger to cool it down, but just the ambient conditions.
8 to 12 hours is allowed for cooling time
I just can't seem to be able to calculate the final temperature of the liquid after the cooling time.
Can anyone please help me

The analytical solution to tank cooling differential equations are documented in Perry's Handbook (Batch Cooling and Heating) and Donald Kern's "Process Heat Transfer". Getting one of those references would be a good first step.

Kevin ,
Pay extreme attention to this process. Let you explain how you are controling the feed rate of pearls , there is a risk to have water boiling !
Let you read this document from Dow .

Breizh

Hi Latexman
I went to Perry's and went to a section similar to that but didn't really show me how to calculate the final temperature after the specified time

Breizh:
Thanks for that Breizh, I knew there were dangers with adding caustic pearls to water and hence, lots of care will be taken into account for the project

Which Editions of Perry's do you have access? Can you access Kern's book?
