Hi,
Can any one please let me know what is the main difference between ASME and ASTM material standards.
Thanks

Karthick:
ASME has published a lot of standards - or codes. Which one are you referring to? Please be specific.
If you are referring to Section VIII, division 1, the boiler and pressure vessel code titled "Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels", then the material properties given are for use in the ASME Code calculations.
The American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) is not a code. It issues properties of materials - but these are not intended as design values withing the ASME Code.
If you are mechanically designing a pressure vessel, then stick to the values issued by ASME in Section VIII.

Hi Art,
I am refering to materials section.
Is there any difference between material listed in ASME SECTION II and ASTM Materials such as A106-GrB, A-105 etc.,.
Thanks
Karthick

I don't know. I never have taken the time to compare them because they serve two different purposes and scopes.
I repeat my basic recommendation: The American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) is not a code. It issues properties of materials - but these are not intended as design values withing the ASME Code.
In the future, please address and respond to my questions (in the same way that I do to yours) so that I can respond to your query correctly.

I might ad that ASME Sec II lists various properties of the "SA" and "SB" materials including the allowable stresses at various temperatures. ASTM, as Art indicates, does not do this. So if you use an ASME material and utilize the information available in BPVC Sec II then you have more information to design with. Of course, if you are designing a Sec VIII pressure vessel, you must use ASME materials.
I have noted that often the ASME and ASTM material specs are the same. Also, often the producer will produce to a "dual spec", listing both.
But you need to confirm all of this for your material and application.
