Hi
I am a process engineer and I want to design acid gas flare knockout drum which is Horizental in crude refinery. according to API 20-30 minutes holdup time is required for LLL-HLL but for some cases, it was 6-7minutes. I want to determine: drum diameter, length, HLL and LLL positions.

I will appreciate you if you give me some help.

Dear rasprocess,

Please go through API 521. There is an example for the KOD ( Flare Knock out drum ) Sizing calculation.

I have develop spread sheet for KOD sizing. Personally suggest make your own spreadsheet. You will come across so many question.

Regards,

Be careful using the procedure of API 521. Whenever you finish sizing it you can check adequacy with software at www.bobby-strain-group.com. There is also a program demo for the best sizing program around. Take a look at it and if you study the results carefully, you can gain insight into the proper procedure. Size as a vertical drum to get the recommended nozzle sizes for the inlet and vapor outlet. You need to gain enough understanding of the API guide to have confidence in your work. Always double and triple check anything you get from someone else, including me. Give careful consideration to liquid holdup; better to have too much than too little. Good luck.

Dear rasprocess,

You can also go through Shell DEP procedures for sizing flare KODs. It defines gas load factor, value of which you have to decide based on for how much micron size you are sizing your flare KOD.

Alok,
You frequently refer to Shell DEP. But this is not a public document. It's intended for use on Shell projects, and probably says so in the document.
