Hello everyone,
I am just trying to learn why the Sonic flare tips are provided. How one can achieve sonic velocity after KO drum. And I gone through API-521, but it does not talk anything about sonic flare tip sizing (radiation calculations).
Also, it will be helpful if you guys can provide some reference, that will be really helpful.
Thanks.

hi
Firstly let me assure you that API 521 does cover Flare tips , try looking at 7.3.3.1 .
Sonic velocity is acheived at the tip by means of a slot through which the gas flows at high delta P. This high velocity entrains air creating a clean low radiation burn(lhopefully)
Suggest you google sonic flare tips etc to teach yourself a little more about these systems.

Anup,
Generally Sonic flare tip is provided at offshore platform not on onshore or any oil & gas processing facilities.
Flare tip is proprietery item so, designed & manufactured by flare vendor only.

Jatin

Thanks all.
Actually I am not able to understand the working principles of sonic Flare tips. I gone through API-521 as well as API-537. However, not found that much information, which will clear my fundamentals. Also, I have to go for Sonic flare tip radiation study in one of the up-coming project. However, I am not able to decide if Brzustowski’s and Sommer’s or API-521 method of flare study are applicable to sonic flare tips or not. Not able to locate any concrete reference, which I should follow. Please guide me.
Regards,
Anup.

Anup,
As far as i know, the main characteristics of sonic flare tips are: Improve air entrainment, reduce smoke formation by improve combustion and reduce thermal radiation. The main point is at very high exit velocities the radiated heat is to be lowered and can reduce overall flare height. Also as far as i know Brzustowski’s and Sommer’s method of flare study is applicable to subsonic flare tips.

I did suggest that you google " Sonic Flares " so that you could find one of teh many explanations of how they work and their uses .
look at
http://www.tech-trad...laring 2010.pdf
http://www.argoflare...ification-pt-1/
As to methods then both API and B&S are single point methods which are inaccurate when compared to other methods.
Depending on how many calculations you are intending to look at you may wish to think on using a sotware package to do the work for you using proven methods.
Jatin
You are incorrect in saying
Generally Sonic flare tip is provided at offshore platform not on onshore or any oil & gas processing facilities.
there are many instances worldwide of sonic tips onshore and in O&G facilities
