In lubrication systems of compressors or pumps , why the cooler is always placed upstream of a filter ?

The filter is downstream of the cooler to remove any particulate that may have been picked up after passing through the cooler. This is important so that no solid deposits can be left in the pump/compressor and thus ruin performance/life time.
